Does Melbourne really have the most women's profiles?

In our own count of SugarDaddyMeet's Australian gallery, Melbourne was the single most common town label on women's profiles: 24 of 237, checked 20 September 2026, ahead of Sydney's 22. That's a label printed on a card, not a population count. It says something about who is active on the platform in this pocket of the country, not about how many women actually live in either city.

The median age among Melbourne-labelled women's profiles was 25, in line with the 25 median across the whole 237-profile sample, and 17 of the 24, about 71%, said they were open to travelling to meet someone. Zoom out to Victoria as a whole, not just the Melbourne label, and the median across the state's 59 women's profiles came out the same: 25.

Men run the other way. Melbourne carried 26 of the 218 men's profiles we counted on 21 September 2026, second behind Sydney's 33; the men's feed, unlike the women's, ran out before we stopped counting. 4 of Melbourne's 26 men's profiles, about 15%, carried a Premium badge, meaning they could message a woman first instead of waiting for her to write to them.

The platform's own Melbourne page makes a different claim again: it advertises “9.2 million+ selective members”, a figure that matches neither the homepage counter nor the Australian landing page's banner (our members guide sets out the other two). We're not endorsing any of those numbers. The 24 and 26 above are our own, from one account's search, on the two days stated.

Who you'll meet, and where they spend their time

Our count only records the town label, so this is about the city, not a count of members: three pockets shape where people work and go out, the CBD around Collins Street, South Yarra and Toorak to the south, and Fitzroy and Brunswick to the north. Each has a different rhythm.

• Collins Street and the CBDLaw firms, the major banks and Melbourne's consulting practices sit along and just off Collins Street. It's a five-day working crowd, generally more free on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening than a Friday.
• South Yarra and ToorakToorak Road runs through both, past Como House and the private schools along the Yarra's south bank. Chapel Street brings a younger retail and hospitality crowd into the same postcode.
• Fitzroy and BrunswickGertrude Street and Brunswick Street carry the city's start-up and creative scene: small agencies, design studios, and the occasional funded founder among a larger number of freelancers. It reads younger and less formal than Collins Street.

How to read a Melbourne profile

Six things worth checking before you reply. None of it is detective work, just reading a profile the way someone who actually lives here would.

1. A Toorak Road or Domain Road address is a bigger tell than a job title. Anyone can write "works in finance." Someone who names a specific South Yarra or Toorak street, or a landmark like the Botanical Gardens, is describing a life they actually live, not a line they wrote for the profile.
2. A vague Collins Street title deserves a follow-up question, not a compliment. "Partner at a firm" or "works in law" could mean a junior associate or a name on the door. Ask which firm, or what the work actually is day to day. A real answer arrives in one short line.
3. Titles like "founder" can mean a lot or very little. "Founder" or "in the industry" can describe a funded company or a laptop at a share house. Ask what he's building and what it does, not what he calls himself.
4. A Melbourne Cup or Spring Racing Carnival photo is easy to fake and easy to check. A marquee photo only proves someone stood in the Birdcage once. A profile that can name which marquee, or who they went with, is telling you something a stock photo can't.
5. Naming an actual tram route beats naming the whole city. Melbourne is bigger than its skyline. Someone who mentions the tram to St Kilda or the walk from Southern Cross is placing themselves somewhere specific, which is harder to invent than a river photo.
6. Short, direct first messages are normal here, not a warning sign. A quick, real question is a good start. A message that reads like a form letter, especially one with your name wrong or copied from somewhere else, is the one worth ignoring.

Where to go on a first date in Melbourne

Low-key, and easy to leave

Ponyfish Island sits under the Evan Walker Bridge at Southbank, a floating deck bar with river views and no dress code, a walk from the Flinders Street end of the CBD. Checked on 22 September 2026, cocktails run A$19 to A$26, wine by the glass from A$13, and beer from A$10 to A$15, open 11am to 1am every day with no booking needed. In Fitzroy, Marion on Gertrude Street pours more than twenty wines by the glass in a room built for exactly this kind of evening; a listing updated in August 2026 put the average spend at about A$35 a head, open seven days from noon.

A proper drink or a considered dinner

Eau de Vie is a cocktail bar tucked down Malthouse Lane in the CBD, the kind of place you'd walk straight past without knowing it was there. As of today, individual cocktails run about A$29, open from 5pm Tuesday to Thursday and 4pm Friday and Saturday. In South Yarra, France-Soir has served French bistro food on Toorak Road since 1986; starters checked the same day ran from A$17 for butter lettuce with vinaigrette to A$34 for a tuna tartare, open seven days.

The occasion dinner

Cutler, on Gertrude Street in Fitzroy, lists a seasonal menu at A$160 alongside à la carte dishes on its own menu page, read on 22 September 2026. Collins Street's answer is fifty-five floors up: Vue de Monde, inside the Rialto tower and checked the same day, runs a single Signature Chef's Tasting Menu at A$380 a head, the most expensive booking in this guide and, going by the view, the hardest to argue with.

What does a sugar relationship in Melbourne actually cost?

The date itself is the one cost you can pin down before you meet anyone, and the venues above give a real range: about A$10 for a beer at Ponyfish Island, up to A$380 a head for the tasting menu at Vue de Monde. Everything between those two figures is a normal Melbourne first date, not a special case.

For scale, not a benchmark: the Australian Bureau of Statistics put full-time adult average weekly ordinary earnings at A$2,083.70 in May 2026, a rise of 3.7% over the year (ABS, released 13 August 2026). We're not printing an allowance figure on this page. There is no reliable published number for what a Melbourne sugar relationship should be worth, and anyone stating one with confidence is guessing.

Is sugar dating safe, and is it legal, in Melbourne?

Safety in Melbourne comes down to the same basics as anywhere. Meet inside the venue, not the car park or the tram stop outside it, and keep the first few meetings in the busy, well-lit pockets this guide already covers. The CBD, Southbank, South Yarra and Fitzroy are all easy to reach by tram or on foot, and taxis and rideshare cars are simple to find on Collins Street, Chapel Street or Brunswick Street late into the evening. Agree how you're both getting home before you sit down, not after the bill arrives.

The platform's own footer says it “does not conduct background checks” on members. A verified photo, which the platform says it decides within 24 hours, confirms a photo is really theirs and nothing more. Romance scams cost Australians reporting to Scamwatch more than A$28.6 million across 1,330 people in 2025 (ACCC, 4 February 2026). Anyone who asks for money before you've met in person is the one warning sign that applies in every city. Report it to Scamwatch and your bank the same day.

On the law: no Victorian law mentions sugar dating, and an adult accepting support from another adult inside a relationship they both agreed to isn't doing anything illegal.
